Who is Droupadi Murmu ?

Droupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of India on 25 July 2022.

She earned her Bachelor's degree in Arts from Ramadevi Women's College in Bhubaneswar and served as a junior assistant in the irrigation and power department in the Odisha government. 

She began her political career as the vice-chairman of the Rairangpur NAC. In addition, the Odisha Legislative Assembly honoured her with its Best MLA of the Year 2007 awardShe is the second female president in the country's history. She was Jharkhand's first female governor. She was also the first Odia woman and tribal leader to be named governor of an Indian state and serve for the full term of her office.

       

What benefits does the President of India gets ?

Droupadi Murmu gets Rs 5 lakh salary per month.  She will get pension of Rs 1.5 lakh after retirement.  Free housing and medical care and Rs 1 lakh annually for office expenditures. Official residence – Rashtrapati Bhavan – with 340 rooms and a floor area of 2,00,000 square feet. a President also has several cars and a bodyguard. 

The President of India always travels in a bulletproof and shockproof car that is provided to them. In fact, Draupadi’s car will not even have a license plate, for security reasons. Former President of India Ram Nath Kovind used to travel in a Mercedes Maybach S600 Pullman Guard. At all times, besides travelling in a car on which gas, bombs, bullets will have no effect, Draupadi will also have a Bodyguard from the elite unit of the Indian Army. 

Further, no criminal proceedings shall be conducted against the President during her term of office. No arrest or imprisonment shall be made against the President her term of office. 

There are some other post-retirement benefits for the President of India, including one furnished rent-free bungalow, two free landlines and a mobile phone, five personal staff, Rs 60,000 a year for the expenses of the staff, and free travel with a companion by train or air. 

How is the president of India selected?

The president is indirectly elected by an electoral college comprising both houses of the Parliament of India and the legislative assemblies of each of India's states and territories, who themselves are all directly elected by the citizens. Murmu bagged votes from a total of 2,824 electors, including 540 MPs, while Sinha won the support of 1,877 electors, including 208 MPs, to succeed Ram Nath Kovid to become the country's 15th president

What are the qualifications to become the President of India?

Few conditions or qualifications are assigned to be as the Indian President. The qualifications to be an Indian President are given below:

He should be an Indian Citizen
Age limit is a minimum of 35 years
He should qualify the conditions to be elected as a member of the Lok Sabha
He should not hold any office of profit under the central government, state government, or any public authority.

Family Details of the President Droupadi Murmu

Draupadi Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker who died in 2014. The couple had two sons, both of whom passed away, and a daughter Itishri Murmu who works in a bank.

In 1984, Murmu lost her firstborn daughter when she was just 3 years old. Between 2010 to 2014, she lost her two young sons and her husband. The loss was too much to bear and she also slipped into depression for some time. Despite this heart-wrenching loss, Murmu gathered herself and did not let her grief stop her from chasing her dreams and the rest is history.

3.  No Dream is Too Small

Elected at 64 years and 46 days, Murmu is the youngest President of India. While taking an oath as the 15th President of India, she said, “My election is proof that the poor in India can dream and make them come true."

4. Never Lose Hope

Draupadi Murmu is a true example of a powerful leader who with her determination, true courage, and perseverance chose to stand tall instead of lying down and giving up. Her journey has been an inspiration to millions of us to never stop trying, no matter what!
