In short selling, the sellers borrow shares at high rates instead of buying it. For example- let say Hindenburg borrow (not buying it) adani group shares at 100 from a broker.
After that they sell off the borrowed shares. The buyer doesn't know about that. When the price start falling then they purchased the shares at low cost say Rs 40. Then they returned the borrowed shares to the broker and kept all the profit.

Hindenburg Allegations:
Hindenburg started investigation on Adani Group two years prior. Based on 2 year investigation on Adani group, the firm reported Adani Group involved in Stock Manipulation and accounting fraud. It also claimed offshore funds in Mauritius about Rs 36,000 crore shares in Adani Group shares. Further, it claimed that these shares are mainly managed by three owners - Monterosa, Elara and New Leaina. They are involved in market Manipulation of Adani stocks.
Further, a Forbes analysis claimed that the three owners are involved to buying up shares as investors in Adani Enterprise. Theek three investors agress to buy 9.24% of all shares. Infact, the analysis revealed that the investors are allotted shares a day before the sale opens for the shares. Thus in this way Adani control over the shares.
5. What is Adani group response?
The Adani group denied the allegations of Hindenburg report. They claimed the report is "calculated attack on India". The Adani group denied all the allegation and addresses they don't have control over the investors who buy their stocks. They are further planning to take legal action against Hindenburg Researc
